Pore Space

Pore space refers to the void volume within underground rock formations that can store fluids such as captured carbon dioxide. Rights to use pore space are leased from the owner of the subsurface and are foundational to carbon sequestration projects. Ownership of pore space generally follows the surface estate unless severed, so projects negotiate with surface owners or, in some states, use pooling rules to assemble a contiguous storage area. Leases set injection rights, monitoring obligations, and payment per acre or per ton stored.

Carbon capture projects assemble pore-space rights parcel by parcel. Gridlync manages these agreements alongside surface access and pipeline right-of-way.

Example

Cinder Carbon leases pore space beneath 5,000 acres owned by the Renner family and three neighbors to inject captured CO2 into a deep saline formation, paying $12 per acre per year plus a fee per metric ton stored over the life of the project.
